The Office for Information Technology Policy of the American Libary Association (ALA) will host a panel on challenges to broadband adoption and library-led strategies at the ALA's 2010 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. Panelists for the June 26th event include Mark Lloyd of the FCC, New Mexico State Librarian Susan Oberlander, and researcher Dharma Dailey.
Allied Media Conference & Media Equity Summit
Allied Media Projects invites proposals for workshops, panel discussions, film presentations, and caucuses for their 11th annual Conference, to be held July 16-19th in Detroit, MI. The AMC Conference is preceded this year by a Summit of Women's Social Justice Media Organizations organized by the Women's Media Equity Collaborative (MEC), supported by a Large Collaborative Grant from the SSRC.
Humanitarianism, Activism, Media, Religion: A Roundtable
Distinctions between religious and secular activist media often seem self-evident. This panel asks what they might share. How do religious and secular forms of activism overlap? How do contemporary humanitarian and activist movements use complex networks of mediation? How do visions of suffering function when mediated and deployed globally? How do the formal properties of media signs and symbols constitute humanitarian and activist movements?

The Necessary Knowledge for a Democratic Public Sphere co-hosted a two-day gathering (23-24 February 2008) of grantees, program partners, scholars and advocates to facilitate discussion on strategies to improve and increase research-advocacy collaborations on media and communications issues. On May 22, there will be an ICA Pre-conference on "Communication and Social Change: Theory, ICTs, Media and Francophone Spheres." Papers for this pre-conference must be submitted by November 15.
Call for Papers: "Exploring New Media Worlds" due November 20
Texas A&M University is sponsoring a conference on "Exploring New Media Worlds: Changing Technologies, Industries, Cultures, and Audiences in Global and Historical Context" from February 29 to March 2. Papers or proposals are due November 20, 2007.
International Conference to evaluate 75 years of the BBC World Service
From December 18-19, there will be a conference on "International Broadcasting, Public Diplomacy and Cultural Exchange" on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the BBC World Service, held in London, UK. The deadline for submission of abstracts for this conference is November 5.

Media Research Pre-conference gathers 200+ academics to strategize on research needs for 2007
On January 11, 2007 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center, the Media Policy Research Pre-conference brought together over 200 media policy researchers, students, activists, and policy-makers to discuss media research needs for the coming year. The all-day conference featured eight working group roundtable sessions on key policy research areas, a poster session to present new scholarship, and a keynote address by FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein. A summary document will be produced as a result of the pre-conference, setting out a media policy research agenda for 2007.

Many of the participants in the January 11 SSRC-Free Press 'Media Policy Research Pre-Conference' also participated in the larger National Conference on Media Reform. Audio recordings of a number of these research-oriented panels are now available at the Free Press conference website.
