Biography
I was a member of the Sociology faculty at Tulane University from 2001-2007. Prior to Katrina, I studied Mexican migration to the United States as well as the sociology of youth. Hurricane Katrina put a new spin on my research when thousands of Latino migrants began arriving in New Orleans.
After I returned to New Orleans from the evacuation I began talking to the Latino newcomers and started several research projects about this group to understand their migratory patterns within the U.S. and their participation in the recovery economy of New Orleans. I am also researching how the pre-Katrina Lations have responded to the arrival of the newcomers.
The disaster not only drew newcomers to the city, but also set New Orleanians on a migratory trajectory. With Jim Elliott, I organized a conference on Disaster and Migration at Tulane in April 2007. We are editing those papers in a volume titled, Displaced City: Hurricane Katrina and the Unequal Recoveries of New Orleans.
I am also involved in several research projects to understand the return or resettlement of New Orleanians. One of these is Adversity and Resilience: Effects of Hurricane Katrina on Vulnerable Populations. Another is an analysis of the Displaced New Orleans Residents Pilot Survey.
